Sir Geoff Hurst: 'England striker's role not set in stone'

Sir Geoff Hurst believes that the striker's role in the England set-up faces competition from a number of "young players" coming through to the senior squad.

England legend Sir Geoff Hurst believes that the coveted striker's role in the national side is up for grabs.

Three Lions boss Roy Hodgson witnessed Manchester United duo Wayne Rooney and Danny Welbeck nab two goals each in England's 5-0 win over San Marino last Friday.

"It is there for someone to stake a claim and take it," The Express quotes Hurst as saying.

"There are times when positions with England are there to be taken and the striking roles are not set in stone under Roy Hodgson. We have a lot of young players coming through at the same time who will all feel they have a chance."

The likes of Andy Carroll, Daniel Sturridge and Jermain Defoe are also in contention for a regular role up front for England.
