Wayne Rooney praises the England fans ahead of tomorrow night's encounter against San Marino at Wembley.

England stand-in captain Wayne Rooney has praised the support that the team has received since he has been involved with the national set-up.

Rooney admitted that he was hoping to give the 90,000 inside Wembley something to cheer about when England face San Marino tomorrow night.

"The fans, certainly since I've been involved with England, have been fantastic," Rooney said. "They've travelled all round the world following us so to have 90,000 fans there tomorrow is fantastic.

"For the players, you don't want to let the fans down so we're looking forward to the game and hopefully we can put on a show."

Rooney also revealed that he was honoured to be asked to captain England in the absence of both Steven Gerrard and Frank Lampard.

He said: "It's a great honour, something I'm very proud of. It's a big challenge for me and something I'm really looking forward to."

England kick off against 207th-ranked San Marino tomorrow night.
