Wayne Rooney is named England captain for the match against San Marino.

Wayne Rooney has been named England captain for the match against San Marino on Friday evening.

England manager Roy Hodgson has handed Rooney the armband, with Steven Gerrard absent through suspension after his red card against Ukraine last month.

Frank Lampard was expected to skipper the side but he was forced to pull out of the squad through injury earlier on Thursday.

It will be the first time that Rooney has captained England in a competitive international.

Gerrard will regain the captaincy when he returns from suspension against Poland on Tuesday night.
