James Ward-Prowse says that captaining the England Under-19 side improved his game against Turkey yesterday.

James Ward-Prowse has described captaining England's Under-19 side as "a really good experience".

The Southampton midfielder wore the armband for the first time in yesterday's 1-0 win over Turkey.

The 18-year-old told the Saints' website: "It was an experience I've always wanted. It's always an honour to play for your country at any level, and to get the captain's armband and do it in my own country was a really good experience.

"The manager said that there were three or four candidates, but he pulled me to a side on the morning of the game to tell me it'd be me. It was a really good moment to be told that I was going to be able to lead my country out.

"I've always thought that I am quite good captain-material, and people have often said that to me. To finally get the armband was really good, and it helped my game. I didn't really change much about my preparation, but during the game I was a lot more vocal because I felt like I had to lead a bit more."

Ward-Prowse has made four appearances at Under-19 level for his national side.
