Danny Murphy has said that Everton have frustrated their fans with the lack of star signings in this summer's transfer window.
Last summer the Toffees made Romelu Lukaku's loan deal from Chelsea permanent for a club-record fee of around £28m, but the biggest signing made by Roberto Martinez this summer was the deadline-day purchase of River Plate defender Ramiro Funes Mori for £9.5m.
Murphy claims that because of the precedent set by the signing of Lukaku, Everton fans will be disappointed with what they have seen from the club this summer.
He told BBC Sport: "Everton fans are frustrated because they went big with Lukaku, making a statement, and this summer they have not spent as much, and it is not on one big player.
"On one hand they are saying they can develop John Stones, but they are not matching that ambition with the players they are bringing in."
As well as Funes Mori, Everton also brought in Gerard Delofeu, Tom Cleverley, Aaron Lennon, Leandro Rodriguez and Mason Holgate during the transfer window.
