Dejan Stankovic "emotional" following Inter Milan farewell

Serbian midfielder Dejan Stankovic describes bidding farewell to Inter Milan after 10 years at the San Siro as an "emotional" experience, while hinting at a new role behind the scenes.

Former Inter Milan midfielder Dejan Stankovic has described bidding farewell to the San Siro this afternoon as an "emotional" experience.

Stankovic went on a lap of honour ahead of Inter's Serie A opener against Genoa today, after deciding not to renew his contract at the end of last season.

Inter went on to win their first match under new coach Walter Mazzarri, claiming a 2-0 success over Genoa.

The Serbian international wore an Inter shirt bearing 315 for the tribute from fans before that success, marking the number of games he has played during a decade with the Nerazzurri.

The 34-year-old told Mediaset Premium: "I am a bit emotional, as 10 years is a lot.

"I sweated for this jersey and entered into the history books of the club. It is not my final goodbye to Inter, though it is my farewell to the pitch."

Stankovic holds the unique distinction of becoming the first player to represent three different nations at a World Cup finals, with appearances for the former Yugoslavia, Serbia and Montenegro and an independent Serbia.
