Antonio Conte 'wants new Italy deal'

Italian FA president Carlo Tavecchio claims that manager Antonio Conte wants to stay in charge of the national team after Euro 2016.

Italian Football Federation president Carlo Tavecchio has claimed that manager Antonio Conte wants to stay in charge of the national team beyond the end of Euro 2016.

The former midfielder has one year remaining on his current contract after taking up the role last summer.

Italy currently sit in second place in their Euro 2016 qualifying group, two points behind leaders Croatia.

"Conte has asked me to extend his contract for a further two years," Tavecchio is quoted as saying by Sky Sports News. "I'm delighted with his request because as everyone knows, I worked hard to get Conte.

"But I can only make commitments during my term as president, not after. It's something that we will consider further on."

Conte won five major honours in four years as Juventus coach before being appointed the manager of Italy.
