Gennaro Gattuso: 'England can't buy experience at Tesco'

Gennaro Gattuso suggests that England's young side will be shaking when they begin their World Cup campaign against Italy.

Former Italy midfielder Gennaro Gattuso has launched an unusual attack on Roy Hodgson's selection policy, suggesting the Three Lions' youthful squad will be beaten by the Azzurri at the World Cup.

Hodgson notably picked several youngsters in his 23-man squad, but Gattuso believes that the England coach has made a mistake in his choices for this summer's tournament.

He told The Mirror: "I don't really agree with Hodgson's youth policy. Experience – it's not something you buy at Tesco.

"It's something you earn, bit by bit, and it matters because I am dead sure that, when youngsters are there listening to the national anthem, their legs will be shaking.

"And, in those cases, you need expert players. Without experience, it can really be tough."

Gattuso earned 73 caps during his international career, scoring a solitary goal and helping Italy to success in the 2006 World Cup.
