Half-Time Report: Patrick van Aanholt strike gives Sunderland lead over Leeds United

Patrick van Aanholt's strike gives Sunderland a 1-0 lead over Leeds United at the break of their FA Cup third-round clash at the Stadium of Light.

Patrick van Aanholt's 33rd-minute strike has given Sunderland the lead against Leeds United at half time of their FA Cup third-round tie.

The Black Cats made a strong start to the game, with Emanuele Giaccherini testing Marco Silvestri with an early strike from distance.

Sunderland almost opened the scoring in the 12th minute when Ricardo Alvarez's shot crashed against the bar.

Leeds struggled to contain Sunderland's attacking threat, with Santiago Vergini going close with a 28th-minute header that was blocked.

Van Aanholt gave Gus Poyet's side the lead with a powerful left-footed strike after being set up by Steven Fletcher.

Sunderland continued their dominance following the goal, but failed add to their score before the break.
