West Ham United hit a late equaliser to earn themselves a point in the 1-1 draw with Leeds United at Elland Road.

West Ham United hit a late equaliser to salvage a point at Elland Road, after going 1-0 down to a 83rd-minute goal from Luciano Becchio.

Both sides came out quickly, looking to gain the upper hand early on. The first chance fell to Leeds on 14 minutes after a free-kick was only cleared as far as Ross McCormack. His first shot was blocked and his second attempt deflected behind for a corner.

From the resulting corner, McCormack again found space and passed to Robert Snodgrass, who avoided one challenge before being halted by a tackle from Abdoulaye Faye.

On 22 minutes, West Ham then threatened to take the lead when Matthew Taylor and James Tomkins combined before the former flicked the ball to Nicky Maynard. The striker's first touch took him away from his marker before Andy Lonergan rushed out of his goal to close him down.

Leeds went close again on the 40th minute. A scramble on the edge of the box broke to Adam Clayton, the midfielder spun round but dragged his shot from 18 yards just wide of the left-hand post.

Deep into injury time there was controversy, as Leeds put the ball into the net but the referee disallowed it, having already blown for a foul in the area.

The half-time whistle blew with both sides level.

Leeds had the first opportunity of the second half on 52 minutes as Clayton got into space on the left corner of the box, before dragging his shot across the face of goal and wide.

On 59 minutes, West Ham missed another chance after Taylor passed to Carlton Cole, whose cross just eluded the toe of the oncoming Taylor on its way past the far post.

Robert Green denied Leeds on 70 minutes with a superb save to push Paul Connolly's header wide.

Former Manchester United youngster Ravel Morrison came on for his debut in the 81st minute, receiving a warm welcome from the Leeds fans.

Leeds took the lead on 83 minutes, after a corner from Snodgrass was headed half-clear. The ball went back to Snodgrass, whose cross was clawed out by Green but headed straight back against the crossbar. Luciano Becchio then followed up and headed in from close range.

West Ham piled forward looking for a late equaliser and got it in injury time. Mark Noble crossed to the edge of the six-yard box and Collins rose above everyone to power a header past Lonergan.

An enthralling game at Elland Road ended with both sides earning a point.
