Matt Le Tissier has expressed his shock at Stuart Downing's inclusion in the England squad for Euro 2012.
The 27-year-old Liverpool winger was named in Roy Hodgson's 23-man party yesterday, despite failing to score a goal or provide an assist in 36 Premier League appearances this season.
"I'm surprised Downing is in [the squad] in front of [Adam] Johnson," the Sky Sports pundit told talkSPORT.
"When you consider the season he had, and given that Roy Hodgson said he's picked the centre-backs on form, you wonder what criteria he's picked Downing on because, on form, he wouldn't have got in the squad.
"That's the biggest surprise for me. And then you look at the standby list and see Jordan Henderson's name, and you see the season he's had, and you wonder what goes through someone's head when they are talking about players on form."
Downing has been capped 33 times by the Three Lions.
