Jurgen Klopp: 'Liverpool showed character'

Jurgen Klopp praises the character shown by his Liverpool side after they secured top spot in their Europa League group with a 0-0 draw with Sion on a poor pitch.

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has said that his side showed character in their 0-0 draw against Sion in the Europa League on Thursday night.

The Reds were unable to find a breakthrough on a semi-frozen pitch in Switzerland, but they nonetheless secured top spot in Group B to finish their group campaign unbeaten in six matches.

Klopp refused to acknowledge the state of the playing surface as a factor in the dull stalemate, but instead praised his side for the way that they saw out the result to qualify for the last 32 as group winners.

"There is nothing to criticise because the ground was crazy to play on for both teams," Klopp told reporters. "We had to stay concentrated and we did stay concentrated for the 90 minutes. Nobody could say that we did not try, so everything is okay.

"When Adam Lallana and Philippe Coutinho are not able to control the ball, you know that something is wrong, but we had no injuries. As a professional footballer you cannot before the match talk about the pitch, but at this level usually there should be heating for the ground.

"We showed character - that is important, you can use it always. Easy games you cannot use, only the result. This was a difficult game. I was pretty satisfied with the reaction."

Liverpool now turn their attention to a home Premier League clash with West Bromwich Albion on Sunday.
