Mohamed Salah breaks a European goalscoring record during Liverpool's 5-1 Europa League thumping of Toulouse, which keeps the Reds out of sight at the top of Group E.

Liverpool winger Mohamed Salah broke yet another goalscoring record with his late strike in the Reds' 5-1 Europa League dismantling of Toulouse in Group E.

The Egypt international was unsurprisingly named among the substitutes for the visit of the Coupe de France holders, who came into the affair sat just two points worse off than Jurgen Klopp's side.

Harvey Elliott, Diogo Jota and Darwin Nunez were chosen to form the hosts' attacking trident, and the latter two both found the net in a frenzied first half either side of a Wataru Endo header.

Thijs Dallinga had briefly given Toulouse hope after Jota's opener, but Les Violets' respite was short-lived, as Endo's first Reds goal and Nunez's emphatic finish into the roof of the net saw Liverpool take a 3-1 lead into the break.

Following the interval, Gabriel Suazo and Nunez were both guilty of horror misses with the goal gaping, but the latter's blunder proved inconsequential, as Ryan Gravenberch followed up to deservedly get his name on the scoresheet.

With the clock winding down in added time, Salah - who came on as a 70th-minute replacement for Gravenberch - capped off a five-star display with a thunderous effort off the crossbar, writing another chapter in football folklore in the process.

Salah's last-gasp strike on Thursday evening was the 31-year-old's 43rd for Liverpool in European tournaments, more than any other player in continental competition for a single English club.

The former Chelsea man had previously drawn level with Arsenal legend Thierry Henry with his 42nd European goal against LASK Linz on matchday one, and the Frenchman has now been left in Salah's wake.

The Egyptian now boasts nine goals and four assists from his opening 13 matches of the new term, while also netting in five of his six home games in 2023-24 so far, only drawing a blank against Union SG.

Prior to Thursday's hammering of Toulouse, Salah's brace in a 2-0 Merseyside derby win over Everton saw the 31-year-old register a Premier League goal contribution for the 13th home game running, only behind Henry (17) and Alan Shearer (18) in that regard.

Sitting fifth in the Reds' all-time scoring charts, Salah now has 195 goals and 83 assists under his belt from 317 matches and needs 34 more strikes to overtake Billy Liddell, who registered 228 efforts for Liverpool.

As well as Salah's personal achievement, Liverpool matched a 33-year-old club record on Thursday night, as Klopp's side made it seven wins from seven home games at the start of the new season in all competitions.

The Reds had not strung together such a run since the 1990-91 campaign, where they prevailed in their first seven matches at Anfield before being held to a 2-2 draw by Manchester City.

Sitting five points clear of Toulouse and Union SG in Group E, Liverpool could confirm a spot in the Europa League last 16 if they beat Les Violets again in two weeks time and Union SG fail to overcome Linz.

Next up for Klopp's troops is another Anfield outing on Sunday, as Nottingham Forest travel to Merseyside in the Premier League.
