Liverpool confirm that Joe Allen's shoulder surgery is a success following the news that the midfielder would not play again this season.

Liverpool have confirmed that Joe Allen's shoulder surgery has gone "very well" following the news that the midfielder would not play again this season.

The Welsh international had been suffering with the problem for a number of months before undergoing an operation on Thursday.

"Joe Allen had surgery this morning, which went very well," Liverpool head of performance Glen Driscoll told the club's official website.

"It's going to be a relief for Joe that this has now happened for him. It has been quite a long-standing issue.

"It was a procedure that was very important. He should be 12 weeks from now, so he'll be fighting fit for the start of pre-season."

Allen has scored two goals in 38 appearances for the Merseysiders this season.
