Home Secretary Teresa May has told the House of Commons how the government intends to publish documents surrounding the Hillsborough disaster for the first time.

The government has announced its intentions to disclose papers surrounding the Hillsborough disaster for the first time.

Home Secretary Teresa May told the House of Commons how the documents will be made available to the public after a motion for them to be published was passed unopposed by MPs.

"The government firmly believes that right way the release these papers is through the Hillsborough Independent Panel - to the families first and then to the public," said May.

"We want to see full disclosure to the panel of all documents relating to Hillsborough.

"I will do everything in my power to ensure that the families and the public get the truth."

The motion in parliament was a result of long-term campaigns from the families of the victims and a successful internet petition.

96 people were killed during the tragedy, which occurred during an FA Cup semi-final between Liverpool and Nottingham Forest in April 1989.
