Danny Murphy 'offered' Liverpool coaching role by manager Brendan Rodgers

Danny Murphy reveals that Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers approached him about joining the club's coaching staff.

Former Liverpool midfielder Danny Murphy has revealed that he held talks with manager Brendan Rodgers about possibly returning to Anfield as part of the coaching staff.

Rodgers was on the hunt for new colleagues following the departures of Colin Pascoe and Mike Marsh.

Gary McAllister was eventually appointed first-team coach, but it appears that Murphy was contacted first.

"A few weeks ago I did have a chat with Brendan about the possibility of maybe working with him and the club again but it didn't quite materialise," Murphy said in an audioBoom podcast published by The Express.

"It was actually an honour to be thought of by him, being in his company for a few hours was great, he was very impressive and as we know Gary McAllister got that job, who is a friend of mine and is a very bright and experienced coach. He's a good guy and I wish him all the best, and the club all the best but it was nice to be thought of."

Murphy made 249 appearances for Liverpool between 1997 and 2004, scoring 44 goals.
