Liverpool goalkeeper Pepe Reina insists that his side must set a positive tone for next season by finishing the current campaign with wins over the big teams.

Liverpool goalkeeper Pepe Reina has stressed that his side must set the tone for progression next season by finishing the current campaign strongly.

Brendan Rodgers's team have failed to win their last two matches, slipping eight points behind Tottenham Hotspur and a European place in the process.

Reina believes that the Reds should not struggle for motivation in their final five games as they bid to finish above city rivals Everton in the top six in the Premier League.

The Spanish goalkeeper told The Mirror: "There are still 15 points to play for and it's vitally important we finish well. We need to make sure we are focused on the games we've got remaining and we need to end the season with a winning mentality.

"That will be important in terms of next season. Look at the games we've got left. Chelsea and Everton at home, Newcastle away, those kind of matches are a motivation for any player, and even more so when you are wearing a Liverpool shirt.

"We need to get some wins. If that gets us into Europe then good, but if not we need those wins for our own pride."

Chelsea are next up for the Reds in the Premier League on Sunday afternoon.
