Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers admits that he believes that Jamie Carragher's retirement this weekend is premature

Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers has admitted that he is gutted to lose Jamie Carragher as the defender prepares to retire this weekend.

Carragher will play the final match of a distinguished Reds career on Sunday against Queens Park Rangers at Anfield.

Rodgers believes that Carragher's dedication means that the retirement is premature and is convinced that the defender has more to give at the highest level due to his attitude.

He told The Sun: "There is a real sadness because for me he could play on. He has never had a lazy day since the day I walked in.

"And he's probably never had a lazy day since he was eight years old and walked into Liverpool. That's a phenomenon."

The 35-year-old has made more than 700 appearances for Liverpool in 17 seasons on Merseyside, while also winning 38 England caps.
