Graeme Sharp describes Brendan Rodgers criticism as "uncalled for"

Former Everton striker Graeme Sharp claims that some of the criticism aimed at Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers in recent weeks is "uncalled for".

Former Everton striker Graeme Sharp has defended Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers, describing some of the criticism aimed his way as "uncalled for".

The Toffees and the Reds will clash at Goodison Park on Sunday for the 225th Merseyside derby, with Rodgers under fire from a number of his club's fans.

Sharp, who played for Everton between 1980 and 1991, told BBC Sport: "This is going to be a massive game for both clubs. Yes, probably on league position Everton could be favourites.

"Liverpool have been up and down this season and some of the criticism of Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers has been uncalled for.

"With big clubs you get added pressure but it has been a little bit over the top. It's too early in the season. I'm sure Liverpool will come with a strong run this season. Everton will know they have to be at their best."

Everton are seventh in the Premier League table going into the derby, a point and three places ahead of their city rivals.
