Ian Wright: 'Liverpool never owed Brendan Rodgers time at Anfield'

Former Arsenal striker Ian Wright suggests that Liverpool made the right call in sacking manager Brendan Rodgers.

Former Arsenal striker Ian Wright has suggested that Liverpool were right to call time on Brendan Rodgers's spell as manager at Anfield.

The Northern Irishman was sacked by the Premier League club three hours after the Reds' 1-1 draw against Everton on Sunday.

During his three-year spell, Rodgers guided the team to within one point of the league title in 2014, but failed to win a single trophy.

After hearing the news, Wright told BBC Sport: "I am shocked. He was meant to be the new kid on the block but he had run out of time.

"It is unfortunate for him but I don't think Liverpool owed him that time. They gave him a lot of money to spend. The club are nowhere near where they want to be. A club of Liverpool's size do not need to answer to anyone."

The club are said to be planning to hold talks with former Borussia Dortmund boss Jurgen Klopp this week, while ex-Real Madrid coach Carlo Ancelotti is also said to be on their wanted list.
