Brendan Rodgers: 'Jordan Henderson wants to be here'

Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers insists that Jordan Henderson wants to stay at the club as he continues to negotiate a contract extension.

Brendan Rodgers has said that he expects Jordan Henderson to sign a new contract with Liverpool before his current deal expires at the end of next season, insisting that the midfielder is happy at the club.

The vice-captain has just 15 months to run on his current contract following his move from Sunderland in 2011, but is understood to have turned down an extension in November.

"I know Jordan Henderson wants to be here at Liverpool. I've got no qualms about that. We're trying to build something here, so Jordan knows the importance of his position here within the team," The Telegraph quotes the manager as saying.

"I hope he's seen how he's improved as a player in the last two-and-a-half years and he will want to continue with that improvement.

"He's a boy who's very happy here. I think it's a separate thing for his agent and the club to sort out, and I know that's what they're looking to do."

Henderson has been captaining the side in recent weeks while Steven Gerrard has been sidelined with a hamstring injury.
