Jamie Carragher: 'Manchester City too reliant on Yaya Toure'

Jamie Carragher criticises Manchester City for being "heavily reliant" on Yaya Toure and "hopeless in Europe".

Former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher has criticised Manchester City for being "heavily reliant" on Yaya Toure and "hopeless in Europe".

The Sky Sports pundit hit out at the club's philosophy of bringing new, youthful talent into the squad and believes that there has been "mismanagement" when it comes to the age of players.

"City were supposed to dominate English and European football with a 'holistic' approach, bringing through young talent and not just spending the huge amounts [Roman] Abramovich did when he arrived at Chelsea," Carragher said in his column for the Daily Mail.

"Instead, despite their obvious successes, they have an ageing squad, problems with Financial Fair Play and are making the same mistakes in the Champions League as when they first played in it.

"To have such riches but have one of the Premier League's oldest squads and be so heavily reliant on one player - Yaya Toure - shows there has been mismanagement and poor decisions with the quality and age of signings."

City are currently five points behind Chelsea in second but can close the gap to just two points, as Chelsea play Tottenham Hotspur in the League Cup final on Sunday.
