Bastian Schweinsteiger axed from Manchester United's Europa League squad

Bastian Schweinsteiger will play no part in Manchester United's group-stage matches in the Europa League after being omitted from the 27-man squad.

Manchester United have left Bastian Schweinsteiger out of their squad for the group stage of the Europa League.

The 31-year-old was named in the Red Devils' Premier League squad on Friday, despite being told by manager Jose Mourinho that it would be "difficult" for him to feature for the club this season.

Schweinsteiger, who bowed out of international football earlier this week with victory over Finland, will not be eligible to play against Feyenoord, Fenerbahce or Zorya Luhansk in the coming months.

Mourinho has yet to use the former Bayern Munich player in a competitive match, leading to criticism from outside, but the Portuguese has refused to give in to the growing pressure and has omitted Schweinsteiger from the 27-man squad submitted to UEFA.

There is a place in the side for youngster Axel Tuanzebe, meanwhile, and Timothy Fosu-Mensah is also included for the six group-stage fixtures which get underway in less than two weeks' time.

Manchester United's 27-man Europa League squad:

Goalkeepers: David de Gea, Sergio Romero, Sam Johnstone

Defenders: Eric Bailly, Phil Jones, Marcus Rojo, Daley Blind, Chris Smalling, Luke Shaw, Timothy Fosu-Mensah, Antonio Valencia, Matteo Darmian, Axel Tuanzebe

Midfielders: Paul Pogba, Juan Mata, Jesse Lingard, Michael Carrick, Ashley Young, Ander Herrera, Henrikh Mkhitaryan, Marouane Fellaini, Morgan Schneiderlin, Memphis Depay

Forwards: Wayne Rooney, Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Anthony Martial, Marcus Rashford
