Sports Mole analyses Manchester United's win away at Newcastle United earlier today.

Unanswered goals from Jonny Evans, Patrice Evra and Tom Cleverley handed Manchester United all three points from their trip to Newcastle United this afternoon.

The Red Devils were two up before the break and despite some pressure from the Magpies, United added a third midway through the second half to seal the victory.

Here, Sports Mole looks over the 90 minutes at the Sports Direct Arena.

Was the result fair?

Football is all about converting your chances and that is what Man United did this afternoon. For that reason alone, the result was fair. Newcastle created plenty, but their clinical touch deserted them.

Newcastle's performance

As mentioned above the Magpies failed to convert any of their chances, some of which were presentable. Alan Pardew will also not be happy to see his side concede twice from set-pieces - particularly when you consider the height that they have in defence.

Man United's performance

They have been heavily criticised for the way that they have defended in recent weeks but there can be no such complaints today. They looked more of a unit and thwarted everything Newcastle had to throw at them. Three unanswered goals is sure to please Sir Alex Ferguson.

Referee's performance

There was a stage in the first half when Howard Webb produced a number of yellow cards and he threatened to lose control of the match. However, he showed why he is considered one of the best in the world during the second half with a very commanding performance.

Sports Mole's man of the match

Wayne Rooney was absolutely everywhere today and gave a performance that was reminiscent of the striker as an 18-year-old. Not only did he start numerous United attacks, he also made several tackles and clearances in and around his side's penalty area.

Biggest gaffe

This is a joint award for Steve Harper and Danny Welbeck. Newcastle goalkeeper Harper dallied when in possession and was robbed by United's Welbeck. Then, with the goal at his mercy, a slightly off-balance Welbeck somehow missed the target.

What's next?

Newcastle: It's one of the biggest games in Newcastle's season as they travel to North-East rivals Sunderland a week on Sunday.

Man United: After the international break United will play host to Stoke City. The Potters have not won at Old Trafford since their promotion to the Premier League.
