Sports Mole dissects the action as West Ham United and Manchester United share the points in a 2-2 draw.

Manchester United twice came from behind to pick up a 2-2 draw against West Ham United at Upton Park on Wednesday.

It was the home side that took the lead after 16 minutes when Ricardo Vaz Te headed home from close range. However, United were level 15 minutes later when Antonio Valencia converted from close range after good work from Shinji Kagawa.

West Ham were back ahead in the early stages of the second period when Mohamed Diame curled an effort into the back of the net. But once more United fought back as Robin van Persie turned home from close range after Kagawa had struck the post late on.

Here Sports Mole dissects the 90 minutes of action between the two Premier League rivals.

Was the result fair?

On the balance of play, a share of the spoils was just about a fair reflection of the match this evening. West Ham deservedly took the lead in the early stages, but United dominated the possession after levelling just past the 30-minute mark. The Hammers scored their second during another impressive spell, but they were under pressure for much of the final 20 minutes.

West Ham's performance

Another positive home display from West Ham would have pleased their supporters. They are never going to be the most technical team in the division, but they certainly play to their strengths. Their ability to test United dwindled in the latter stages when Andy Carroll tired, but they will be happy with a point against the league leaders.

Manchester United's performance

United's performance this evening reflected their season since the turn of the year. Impressive in patches, but frustrating for long periods. They were in control of the possession all evening, but failed to turn that dominance into clear chances. Overall, Sir Alex Ferguson will be pleased with a point as they move closer to their 20th league title.

Sports Mole's man of the match

Antonio Valencia: It hasn't been the best of seasons for the United winger, but he was back to his very best this evening. Aside from levelling in the first period, the powerful midfielder caused all sorts of problems with his pace and direct running.

Biggest gaffe of the match

Carroll caused United all sorts of problems this evening, but he took the law into his own hands when he clattered into David de Gea in the latter stages of the first period. It was a really poor challenge from the former Newcastle United striker.

Referee performance

Lee Probert should have booked Carroll for a poor challenge on De Gea in the latter stages of the first period, while he was also guilty of being too lenient with challenges in the box. He was less involved in the second half, but both managers will have had complaints with his display.

What next?

West Ham: The Hammers will hope to return to winning ways when they welcome Wigan Athletic on Saturday.

Manchester United: United will attempt to continue their march towards the title when they host Aston Villa next Monday.
