Michael Carrick backs Romelu Lukaku to impress at Manchester United

Manchester United midfielder Michael Carrick tips Romelu Lukaku to deliver for the Red Devils next season following his arrival from Everton.

Manchester United midfielder Michael Carrick has backed Romelu Lukaku to deliver for the Red Devils next season.

Lukaku's arrival at United was confirmed on Monday afternoon, and the 24-year-old has already trained with his new teammates ahead of a potential debut against Los Angeles Galaxy this weekend.

Carrick has insisted that the Belgium international has the credentials to thrive at the Theatre of Dreams, and has also revealed that he is pleased to no longer have to face the former Everton centre-forward.

"I've tried to tackle him a few times and got nowhere near him, so at least I won't have to do that too often," Carrick told reporters. "Listen, you've seen what he can bring to us. He's a big guy, he has got a big presence and he scores goals.

"That's what we're going to need from him, that's what he's going to bring, and I'm sure he'll have a great time here. You don't want to look to put everything on his shoulders, but that's why he's been brought here, to help at that end of the pitch, to score and create goals.

"As a team and as attacking players everybody needs to chip in to score goals and share the load a little bit, to take the pressure off the individuals. But of course, he's going to be the main one we look to for scoring goals and I'm sure he will."

Lukaku scored 25 goals and registered six assists in 37 Premier League appearances for Everton last season.
