Gary Neville: 'David Moyes should be given credit for Wayne Rooney deal'

Gary Neville believes that David Moyes should be praised for his role in encouraging Wayne Rooney to sign a new deal at Manchester United.

Former Manchester United defender Gary Neville has claimed that David Moyes deserves plenty of credit for his role in securing Wayne Rooney's services for the foreseeable future.

The club confirmed on Friday that Rooney had agreed a new lucrative contract which could keep him at Old Trafford until 2019, and Neville believes that Moyes should be praised for playing a crucial part in the deal.

"David Moyes will be delighted. It has been suggested that he can't attract players and that he can't keep people at the club, but that's starting to dwindle away with this signing really," Neville told Sky Sports News.

"He's settled Wayne Rooney down. Credit must go to the manager for getting him into the frame of mind whereby he wants to commit for the rest of his career.

"There's been ups and downs for Wayne Rooney in terms of whether he would stay at United but he has now committed himself for life really by signing this contract."

Rooney is expected to earn £300,000 per week for committing his future to United.
