Phil Jones has revealed that the England squad are "pleased" that FIFA have allowed the team to wear poppies on their armbands against Spain this weekend.

Manchester United defender Phil Jones believes that an English triumph over Spain at the weekend will be a perfect tribute to the British armed forces.

Controversy has surrounded FIFA's decision to ban the Three Lions from having poppies sewn into their shirts against Spain at Wembley this weekend.

After pressure from the FA as well as Prime Minister David Cameron, the governing body has decided to allow the team to wear poppies on their black armbands.

"I think everyone's pleased," said Jones in a press conference. "It's nice for us to pay our respects by showing that poppy sign on the armband and hopefully we can get the win on Saturday for them."

The former Blackburn Rovers defender, who has one cap in the senior England squad, is confident that he is versatile enough to keep his place in the team.

"Hopefully my performances at club level can show that I'm worthy of being here more regularly," he added. "I'll play wherever the manager picks me to play.

"I think I'm more than capable in playing for right back, centre back and centre midfield. I've had quite a lot of experience in all three of those positions."

The Three Lions take on the World Cup winners at Wembley on Saturday.
