Wayne Rooney's midfield role 'confuses' David May

David May tells Sports Mole that Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal should move Wayne Rooney into a more attacking role.

Former Manchester United centre-back David May has conceded that he is "confused" by Louis van Gaal's continued selection of Wayne Rooney in midfield.

Ever since the 29-year-old arrived at Old Trafford from Everton in 2004, he has primarily featured as a forward, which has yielded a return of 224 goals in 465 outings.

However, Van Gaal, who took charge of United in the summer, has often overlooked the likes of Ander Herrera this season to use his captain in the heart of the midfield.

Rooney's performances, particularly since the turn of the year, have been heavily scrutinised, with many people insisting that he should be moved into a more familiar role.

It is a belief that is shared by May, who has told Sports Mole that there is room for both Rooney and Herrera in the United team.

"[Playing Rooney in midfield has] confused everybody. When you've got a player like Ander Herrera, who has been on the bench, he's the perfect choice to play in the midfield role that Wayne is playing in," said the 44-year-old.

"Then, you can push Wayne further forward and he'll score goals. He's not had a shot on goal this year, which is surprising for a player that is renowned for scoring and creating goals."

Van Gaal recently suggested that he is planning to keep Rooney in midfield for the time being.
