Manchester United's outgoing chief executive David Gill is "confident" that Wayne Rooney will opt to stay with the Premier League champions this summer.

Manchester United's outgoing chief executive David Gill believes that striker Wayne Rooney will be at Old Trafford next season following weeks of speculation.

Sir Alex Ferguson, who retired as United manager at the end of the season, revealed that the England international recently requested to leave the club for the second time in three years.

Despite Rooney's apparent intention to leave the North-West outfit, Gill believes that the Premier League champions will not relinquish the striker this summer.

"I'm confident he will be there next season," Gill told Sky Sports News. "He's a great, great player at a great, great club and the club doesn't want to lose him. I'm sure every bit of work is being taken with Wayne and his advisers to make sure that happens."

Chelsea, Bayern Munich and Paris Saint-Germain have been among the clubs touted as possible destinations for the 27-year-old.
