Manchester United reportedly shelve plans to sign a new striker this summer, following Edinson Cavani's contract extension.

Manchester United will reportedly shelve plans to sign a new striker this summer, following Edinson Cavani's contract extension.

The Red Devils announced on Monday that the 34-year-old Uruguayan, who joined the club as a free transfer in October 2020, has signed a new one-year deal to stay at Old Trafford for next season.

Cavani has impressed Ole Gunnar Solskjaer throughout this campaign, recording 15 goals and five assists in 35 appearances across all competitions.

United have been heavily linked with a move for a new centre-forward this summer, with Borussia Dortmund's Erling Braut Haaland and Tottenham Hotspur's Harry Kane believed to be at the top of their wishlist.

However, The Times reports that United will prioritise the purchase of Haaland's teammate Jadon Sancho ahead of a striker this summer, now that Cavani is to stay with the club for next season.

Solskjaer tried to sign the English winger last year but the Red Devils were unwilling to meet the German club's £108m asking price.

Dortmund are understood to have since lowered their valuation of Sancho to around £80m, a figure that United would be prepared to pay.
