Manchester United 'demand £30m for Chris Smalling'

Manchester United reportedly slap a £30m price tag on centre-back Chris Smalling following a failed loan bid from Everton.

Manchester United are said to have placed a £30m price tag on Chris Smalling in a bid to ward off any deadline-day interest in the defender.

Everton reportedly tried to sign the 29-year-old on loan earlier this week but were informed that United would only consider a permanent exit for the centre-back this summer.

According to The Mirror, the Toffees were told that it would take a fee of at least £30m to convince United to sell at this late stage of the transfer window.

The newspaper says that manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer still sees Smalling as a "valuable" part of his squad, despite him sitting behind new signing Harry Maguire and Victor Lindelof in the pecking order at Old Trafford.

Smalling has been with United for nine years, making 323 appearances, and has three years remaining on his current contract.

The club are believed to be open to offers for Smalling's fellow defenders Marcos Rojo and Phil Jones, although they are only likely to sanction permanent rather than temporary exits.
