After a rather listless start to the game, Montpellier finally created something noteworthy in the 17th minute as Djamel Bakar found space to fire towards the bottom corner, only to be denied by Alphonse Areola.
The game's next major chance was to fall to Bastia and they made full use of it as Giovanni Sio flashed a shot across the face of goal and inside the post following Floyd Ayite's pass.
Having reassessed the situation at half time, Montpellier came out stronger in the second period and they should have pulled level, but Morgan Sanson headed tamely wide from Daniel Congre's crossed delivery.
The home side continued to push and they were finally rewarded when Bryan Dabo brought Ayite down in the box, leaving Lucas Barrios to bring things level from the spot.
Montpellier were then presented with a chance to go in front as Bastia conceded another penalty thanks to Guillaume Gillet's handball, allowing Anthony Mounier to rifle into the top right corner and make it 2-1.
Montpellier cemented all three points in injury time when Sanson capped off the night with a memorable shot from distance that flew into the bottom corner.
