Newcastle's goal-machine Demba Ba will miss part of the Premier League season because of international duty with Senegal at the Africa Cup of Nations.

Newcastle United's in-form forward Demba Ba is excited by upcoming Africa Cup of Nations but admits he understands the Toon Army's disappointment at his absence.

Ba will travel to the tournament, which is being co-hosted by Gabon and Equatorial Guinea, to represent Senegal from January 21 to February 12.

French-born Ba has helped the Magpies to a lofty third in the league by netting eight times since joining from West Ham over the summer.

"I understand why Newcastle supporters are disappointed that I will be away for a few weeks at the African Cup of Nations, but I hope they also understand why it is so important to me to play in it," the 26-year-old said.

"Senegal is my nation and back home in Senegal, it would mean so much to the people if we were to do well in the competition.

"It is just unfortunate that it happens during the Premier League season. It is a shame I will have to miss some Newcastle games."

Ba moved to St James' Park for on a free transfer because of West Ham's relegation to the Championship last year.
