John Carver: 'Newcastle United should focus on English players'

Former Newcastle United manager John Carver believes that the Tyneside club should review their recruitment policy and buy English and British players.

Former Newcastle United manager John Carver has claimed that the Tyneside club needs to review their recruitment policy and scout British players.

The 50-year-old, who managed the Magpies between January and June this year, highlighted Tottenham Hotspur's home-based transfer policy as one to aspire to.

Carver told the Chronicle Live: "You have to recruit the right personalities. You look at Tottenham's situation and how they've recruited English and British players.

"Newcastle have the philosophy of going for Dutch and French players, but as Jamie Vardy has shown there are players in non-league and the Championship, League One and League Two.

"But you have to have a structure in place that makes you recruit and develop, and put the resources in to scout these players in England."

Newcastle sit a place and a point above the Premier League drop zone following their 3-0 defeat against Leicester City, in which Vardy scored his 10th consecutive league goal.
