Steve McClaren: 'Fabricio Coloccini is Newcastle United captain for now'

Newcastle United manager Steve McClaren says that Fabricio Coloccini remains the club's captain, but that he could experiment with different options ahead of the new season.

Newcastle United boss Steve McClaren has insisted that Fabricio Coloccini will remain the club's captain for now, but that he could experiment with different options during pre-season.

Some sections of the Newcastle fans have called on their new boss to search for a different skipper, but the former England coach has so far ignored suggestions for the likes of Jack Colback or Daryl Janmaat to be given the armband permanently.

"I know it's an issue, and something everybody's interested in," said McClaren, according to The Express.

"At this moment, Coloccini is the captain. In each game we play, maybe we'll have a different captain. I like to do that, especially in pre-season.

"But for the moment, if Coloccini plays, Coloccini is captain."

McClaren stated earlier this week that he is challenging his side to finish in the top eight of the Premier League next season.
