Newcastle United appeal Fabricio Coloccini dismissal

Newcastle United appeal the red card shown to Fabricio Coloccini in the defeat against Sunderland.

Newcastle United have confirmed that they have appealed the red card shown to Fabricio Coloccini in the Tyne-Wear derby defeat against Sunderland.

The defender was dismissed by referee Robert Madley after shoulder charging Black Cats striker Steven Fletcher at the end of the first half, which resulted in the awarding of a penalty kick.

Adam Johnson converted the spot kick to give Sunderland the lead before they went on to secure a 3-0 victory over their local rivals at the Stadium of Light.

"Newcastle United have lodged an appeal with the Football Association for the wrongful dismissal of Fabricio Coloccini during Sunday's Tyne-Wear derby match against Sunderland at the Stadium of Light," a statement on the club's official website read.

"The appeal will be heard by a Regulatory Commission on Tuesday afternoon and the club will be notified of the result shortly afterwards."

If the red card is upheld, Coloccini will miss Newcastle's Premier League clash with Stoke City on Saturday.
