Newcastle United fail with Fabricio Coloccini appeal

Newcastle United fail with their attempt to overturn Fabricio Coloccini's three-match ban.

Newcastle United have lost their appeal to overturn captain Fabricio Coloccini's three-match ban.

The defender was shown a straight red card during Saturday's 3-0 defeat to Everton for a foul on Aaron Lennon.

Coloccini will now sit out the Magpies' next three games, starting with this weekend's visit of Arsenal in the Premier League.

"An Independent Regulatory Commission has today rejected a wrongful dismissal claim in relation to Newcastle United's Fabricio Coloccini," read a statement on the Football Association's website. "Therefore, his standard punishment of a three-match suspension remains and will commence with immediate effect."

Newcastle are currently in 11th place in the Premier League table.
