Newcastle boss Alan Pardew blames Sunderland captain Lee Cattermole for Sunday's ill-tempered Tyne-Wear derby at the Sports Direct Arena.

Newcastle United manager Alan Pardew has blamed Sunderland captain Lee Cattermole for Sunday's "ugly" Tyne-Wear derby.

The midfielder was booked inside 40 seconds for the visitors for a foul on Cheick Tiote as the sides drew 1-1 at the Sports Direct Arena.

Cattermole was then dismissed after the final whistle for arguing with referee Mike Dean.

Stephane Sessegnon was also sent off for the Black Cats in a match which saw eight players booked.

"In the first half Sunderland came here to upset us and Cattermole set the scene, it was ugly," Pardew told BBC Sport.

"We put them under pressure and sometimes people crack. And when Sessegnon was sent off it was all us."

Shola Ameobi's injury-time goal earned the Magpies a draw with their local rivals.
