Newcastle United head coach Steve McClaren has reportedly identified Derby County's Richard Keogh as an ideal candidate to improve his defence this summer.
McClaren is expected to invest heavily after being given assurances about the club's approach to the transfer market, and adding defensive options is likely to be a priority for the new boss.
Keogh worked with McClaren during his spell at Derby, and The Guardian claims that Newcastle are considering a move for the central defender, who is believed to be valued at £4m.
However, the report suggests that the Magpies could face competition from Sunderland and West Bromwich Albion.
Keogh's current deal with Derby expires in 2018.
