David Ginola confirms he will no longer run for FIFA presidency

Retired French footballer David Ginola confirms that he is no longer running for the FIFA presidency after he failed to get the backing of five member associations.

Former Newcastle United and Tottenham Hotspur player David Ginola has confirmed that he will no longer run for the FIFA presidency.

The 48-year-old's campaign, which was backed by a £250,000 investment from Paddy Power, looked to be coming to an end when his crowdfunding page closed yesterday.

'Team Ginola' confirmed that all donations will be returned, and it has now been announced that Ginola failed to receive the required nominations from five FIFA member organisations to challenge Sepp Blatter.

The Frenchman said in a statement: "Having not obtained required five nominations by deadline I will not be able to continue with FIFA presidential candidacy."

Ginola's campaign was widely regarded as a publicity stunt.
