Michael Appleton is demanding an improvement from his new Portsmouth squad.

New Portsmouth manager Michael Appleton has demanded an improvement from his players.

The 35-year-old, who was recently named as Steve Cotterill's successor at Fratton Park, saw his team lose 2-0 at Watford this afternoon.

After the match Appleton was highly critical of his playing squad.

"It was not good enough and I told the players that," he said. "At the end of the day, there is a lot of experienced players in there.

"It was a big disappointment and I expect performances to be better and I am sure they will be in the coming weeks."

Appleton had been a coach at West Bromwich Albion before making the switch to Pompey.
