Joey Barton: 'Racism is due to lack of intelligence'

Joey Barton attributes racism in football to fear and a lack of intelligence.

Joey Barton has described racism in football as a result of "a lack of intelligence and understanding".

The QPR captain, whose brother was jailed for a racist murder in 2005, has continued his long-standing fight against prejudice and discrimination by joining the Show Racism the Red Card campaign.

"It is ignorance or a fear of what people don't know and don't understand," he said.

"I remember playing with Shaun Wright-Phillips when we went to Montenegro to play for England Under-21s. There was virtually a whole stand doing monkey chants. I remember looking at each other thinking 'what's going on?'

"The only conclusion I can come to is a lack of intelligence and understanding. Hopefully, great campaigns like Show Racism the Red Card can reach people and transcend sport to show people what is out there."

QPR are currently in 11th place in the Premier League, three points clear of the relegation zone.
