Report: Southampton, Newcastle United interested in Charlie Austin

Southampton and Newcastle United are leading the race to sign Queens Park Rangers striker Charlie Austin, according to reports.

Queens Park Rangers striker Charlie Austin has reportedly emerged as a target for Southampton and Newcastle United ahead of the summer transfer window.

Austin was unable to save QPR from relegation despite scoring 17 goals in his debut Premier League season so far, and the club are expected to face a battle to keep him as they prepare for a return to the Championship.

The 25-year-old is believed to be closing in on an England call-up, and his eagerness to impress Roy Hodgson means that he is likely to be keen on a move away from Loftus Road.

According to the Daily Mail, both Southampton and Newcastle are considering making official approaches to QPR when the window opens.

Jay Rodriguez's return from injury will boost the Saints' attack next season, while forwards Graziano Pelle and Sadio Mane have both impressed since joining the club last summer.

A possible move for Austin from Newcastle will hinge on whether the club can find the points required to avoid the bottom three, but signing a striker is expected to be a priority.

QPR were reported to have paid £4m to sign Austin from Burnley in 2013.
