Alvaro Arbeloa says that finishing top of their Champions League group won't necessarily result in an easier draw.

Real Madrid defender Alvaro Arbeloa has insisted that finishing top of the group guarantees nothing in the Champions League.

The La Liga champions progressed to the knockout stages of the competition following a 1-1 draw with Manchester City at the Etihad Stadium on Wednesday night.

Borussia Dortmund sit top of Group D, but Arbeloa, who was sent off against City, is adamant that finishing top of the group doesn't do them any favours.

"[Manchester City] were better in the second half, they had space down the right side because we know that we've got to put in the work there and give that bit extra to keep Cristiano [Ronaldo] fresh [to attack]," said Arbeloa.

"You never know if it's better to be first or second [in the group] – first place guarantees you nothing. Playing the second leg at home can be better, but we'll have to wait for the draw."

Madrid face Ajax in their final game of the group stages.
