Martin O'Neill: 'New Republic of Ireland contract not signed yet'

Republic of Ireland manager Martin O'Neill reveals that his contract extension with the team has only been verbally agreed.

Republic of Ireland manager Martin O'Neill has revealed that he has not yet put pen to paper on a contract extension.

The Football Association of Ireland announced earlier this week that O'Neill, assistant Roy Keane and members of the coaching set-up had all signed deals that would see them stay in charge of the team until after the 2018 World Cup.

However, O'Neill confirmed that the extension has only been verbally agreed, with the formalities to be completed after Euro 2016.

"I've shaken hands with [chief executive] John [Delaney], that's all that's necessary," he told reporters.

"John felt that going into the Euros it might be a decent thing to do, so fine. I'm happy with it. John and I had a conversation, I've shaken hands with him and I have implicit trust in him."

Ireland will take on Sweden in their opening Euro 2016 match on Monday before subsequent games against Belgium and Italy.
