UEFA hands Russia suspended disqualification from Euro 2016 over violent clashes

UEFA hits Russia with a suspended disqualification from Euro 2016 over their fans' violent clashes in Marseille.

UEFA has issued a suspended disqualification from Euro 2016 to Russia over their supporters' violent conduct in Marseille.

The European governing body opened disciplinary proceedings against Russia after groups of their fans attacked England supporters at the Stade Velodrome on Saturday.

On the final whistle of the 1-1 draw, Russian supporters charged into the England end of the stadium and some were seen kicking and punching rival fans.

UEFA's disciplinary panel has now announced that Russia will be booted out of the tournament if there is a repeat of the Stade Velodrome violence, but it has not been made clear if the suspension will be lifted should the supporters be involved in brawls outside of the football grounds.

A statement read: "The disqualification is suspended until the end of the tournament. Such suspension will be lifted if incidents of a similar nature (crowd disturbances) happen inside the stadium at any of the remaining matches of the Russian team during the tournament."

Russia have also been fined €150,000 (£118,785) as punishment for the crowd trouble, use of fireworks and racist behaviour.
