Darren Fletcher backs Brian McClair appointment

Scotland captain Darren Fletcher believes that Brian McClair will help the national team to develop following his appointment as the country's performance director.

Scotland captain Darren Fletcher has given his backing to Brian McClair following his appointment as the country's performance director.

The former Manchester United striker was installed in the role last month by the Scottish Football Association.

Having been coached by McClair during his fledgling career at Old Trafford, Fletcher believes that the 51-year-old will do a good job in helping to develop the national team.

"Brian's appointment is a real coup for the Scottish FA and Scottish football," he told the SFA's official website. "He was a big influence in my career as reserve-team manager and in that six-month period I benefited greatly from his mix of old-fashioned values and modern coaching ideas and principles.

"He is a very deep thinker about the game and it's only when I look back now that I realise those methods have stuck with me and helped me a great deal in my career. It was almost a subconscious form of coaching."

McClair scored two goals in 30 appearances for Scotland between 1986 and 1993.
