Sevilla beat Bundesliga side Borussia Monchengladbach 3-0 in their opening game of this season's Champions League Group D.

Sevilla have beaten Bundesliga side Borussia Monchengladbach 3-0 in their opening game of this season's Champions League Group D.

The La Liga side came close to taking the lead after just five minutes when winger Vitolo hit the Monchengladbach post after receiving the ball from Jose Antonio Reyes.

Roel Brouwers had an opportunity to put the visitors in front just one minute later, but didn't connect well enough with Ibrahima Traore's cross and watched his header pass wide of the post.

Traore himself then had a chance to shine after a lay-off from Raffael, but his shot was also wide of the mark with 15 minutes gone.

Looking for his second goal of the season, Sevilla striker Kevin Gameiro had two chances after 30 minutes, but a diving header found the side-netting while a volley close to goal was blazed over.

Into the second half, and it was Gameiro who gave the home side the lead after two minutes of play with a penalty after Monchengladbach keeper Yann Sommer brought Vitolo down in the box.

Sevilla had a second penalty awarded two minutes later after Vitolo was brought down for a second time in the box, but Gameiro could only see his shot rattle off the crossbar.

Raffael had a half-chance to get Monchengladbach back in the game, but Sevilla continued to threaten through Ever Banega and Jose Antonio Reyes before Gameiro was taken down in the box to give Sevilla a third penalty of the evening.

Rather than Gameiro, however, it was Banega who stepped up to the spot and buried the ball into the back of the net to give his side a second goal.

Sevilla finished the game off with less than 10 minutes remaining when substitute Yevhen Konoplyanka caught Sommer out at his near post, when what appeared to be a cross ended up in the back of the net from an acute angle to give the La Liga side a 3-0 win.
