Sheffield Wednesday confirm the appointment of former Cardiff City boss Dave Jones as their new manager.

Sheffield Wednesday have confirmed the appointment of Dave Jones as their new manager following the exit of Gary Megson.

Jones has signed a three-and-a-half-year deal at Hillsborough and will take charge for the first time against Rochdale on Saturday.

He told the club's website: "This is a fantastic football club and a fantastic challenge for me.

"Promotion is the first ambition and from there is to try and get to the Holy Grail, which is the Premiership.

"I've had a lot of calls asking why I have dropped down to League 1 but I don't see it that way. I look at the size of the club and think this is a club that can go places."

The 55-year-old has been out of a job since he was sacked by Cardiff at the end of last season.

Wednesday chairman Milan Mandaric added: "It was essential that we made a swift appointment with 13 games to go this season and I am convinced we have the right man for this job.

"I like his style of football and his approach to the game but more than anything else, he is a builder of clubs and he will help to galvanise Sheffield Wednesday."

Megson, who was dismissed somewhat surprisingly considering the Owls' lofty league position and recent win over Steel City rivals Sheffield United, has said that he would like to return to manage his hometown club in the future.
